머리가 무거워지고 나의 시야는 흐려졌어
하룻밤 쉬기 위해 멈춰야 했지

현관에 한 여인이 서 있었고
교회 종소리가 들려왔지
나는 마음속으로 생각했어
"이곳은 천국인가? 지옥인가?"
그때 그녀는 촛불을 켜고 나를 안내했지

복도 저편에서 이야기소리가 들려왔어
사람들이 이렇게 말했던 것 같아
"아름다운 캘리포니아에 오신 것을 환영합니다
정말 사랑스럽고 환상적인 곳이예요
언제나 방이 가득하지요"

그녀의 마음은 티파니에 쏠려있고
벤츠를 타고 다니지
그녀에겐 멋진 남자들도 많아
그녀는 그들을 친구라고 부르지

그들은 정원에서, 감미로운 여름날의 열기로
땀을 흘리며 춤을 추지
어떤 이는 추억을 떠올리기 위해 춤추고
어떤 이는 추억을 잊기위해 춤을 추지
지배인에게 나의 와인을 갖다 달라고 청했지
"그런 술은 1969년부터 취급하지 않아요" 라고 하더군

한밤중에 눈을 떴지
아직도 먼 곳에서 떠드는 소리가 계속되더군
"아름다운 캘리포니아 호텔에 오신 것을 환영합니다
정말 사랑스럽고 환상적인 곳이죠
그들은 캘리포니아 호텔에서 인생을 즐겨요
정말 놀라워요
핑계거리를 준비해서 오세요"

천정은 거울로 되어있고
얼음을 띄운 핑크빛 샴페인
그녀는 말했지
"이곳에서 우리 모두는 스스로 포로가 되었어요"

주인의 방에서는 축제가 열렸고
그들은 날카로운 칼로 찔렀지만
결코 그 짐승을 죽일 수는 없었지

마지막으로 기억나는 건
내가 출구를 찾고 있었다는 거야
나가는 길을 찾아야만 했어

경비원은 내게 진정하라며 말했지
"우리는 손님을 맞이하도록 되어 있어요
원하시면 언제든 나갈 수 있지만
결코 이곳을 떠나지는 못해요"
